Summer Feeding 2024

The Summer Feeding Service Program (SFSP) is a federally-funded and regulated program that provides free meals to children and teens under the age of 19 years during the summer weeks when school is not in session. Children one (1) year of age and younger are not eligible.

This summer, due to the permanent non-congregate feeding rule from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), our department will be providing a unique meal service in which 7-day meal packs will be made available for eligible children for consumption at home. Each meal pack will consist of 7 breakfast meals and 7 lunch meals. Meal Pack Pick-up will be available on Tuesday evenings from 5:00 - 6:30 PM at two (2) different locations: Zoneton Middle School & Cedar Grove Elementary School.

TEXT the word “food” or “comida” to 304-304 to locate a Summer Meal Site for children. When prompted by text, enter a specific address and a list of local meal sites will be provided.

One of the regulations of the SFSP is to ensure that the duplication of meals does not occur. Please know that through the SFSP all eligible children are allowed to receive one breakfast meal and one lunch meal per day. In order to operate this program with the utmost integrity, we are seeking your cooperation and understanding in our efforts to feed more kids.

If you are interested in this meal service for your child, we ask that you please complete the google form by scanning the QR Code below. This will help us plan accordingly for our upcoming meal services. Please note that we will provide 7-day breakfast only meal packs, along with lunch only meal packs in order to accommodate some of your children’s schedules and needs. This will also help us remain compliant with one of our most important federal regulations, which is monitoring the duplication of meals.

Please note that our department will also be serving meals through the SFSP at other locations in our communities. Therefore, participation in these community events will hinder participation in the 7-day meal pack service. For example, if your child attends YMCA at Freedom Elementary or Shepherdsville Elementary, they would not be eligible for the meal pack service because they will be receiving breakfast and lunch meal services through the SFSP at the YMCA.

SFSP Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can someone other than a parent or guardian pick up a meal pack on behalf of my child?

A: Yes, only if the child is present at the time of pick up and the child can validate their identity. Parents/guardians may pick up meal packs on behalf of their child without the child being present.

Q: What if a parent or guardian is not available Tuesday evenings to pick up meals between 5:00 -6:30 PM?

A: It is likely that this meal service may not be available for your child. However, reach out to Stephanie Norris, Program Assistant, to see what other option may be available. We may be able to accommodate an earlier pick up in the case of special circumstances.

Q: Are these meal packs really free of charge?

A: Yes. This meal service is made available through the Summer Feeding Service program (SFSP), which is a federally-funded meal program for children under the age of 19 years that is conducted during the summer weeks when school is not in session.

Q: Why can’t adults have access to these meal packs if they are free for children?

A: The SFSP is a federally-funded child nutrition program in which the focus is on feeding children. School Nutrition Departments receive federal reimbursement dollars for feeding children. Federal reimbursement is not available for feeding adults.

Q: My child is attending Vacation Bible School this week and will be receiving lunches through the SFSP while at Bible School. Is my child still available for a 7-day meal pack?

A: Since the SFSP will be providing lunches to Vacation Bible Schools at Little Flock Baptist and Victory Baptist, please note the names of the children attending the Bible Schools in the google form and they will still be eligible for a 7-day breakfast meal pack.

Q: My child attends summer YMCA at Shepherdsville Elementary and/or Freedom Elementary. Is my child eligible to receive a 7- day meal pack?

A: No. The children in the YMCA Program at these two (2) locations will be receiving breakfast and lunch meal services through the SFSP, therefore, duplication of meals will occur if a 7-day meal pack is served making these children ineligible for meal pack services.

Q: My child attends summer YMCA at Pleasant Grove Elementary and/or Old Mill Elementary. Is my child eligible for a 7-day meal pack?

A: Yes. Because breakfast and lunch meal services will not be provided at these two (2) YMCA locations through the SFSP, these children would remain eligible for the 7-day meal pack service.

Q: My child attends the LEAP Program at Brooks Elementary and Shepherdsville Elementary. Is my child eligible for the 7-day meal pack service?

A: Since the SFSP will be providing breakfast meal services to the summer LEAP Programs, please note the names of the students attending in the google form and they will still be eligible for a 7-day lunch meal pack.

Q: My child attended a local library event today and received a lunch meal through the SFSP. Is my child still eligible to receive a 7- day meal pack?

A: Since the child received a lunch meal through the SFSP, they would only be eligible to receive the 7-day breakfast meal pack, otherwise, a duplicate meal would be served which is a violation of regulation. Please provide any special comments in the google form that may pertain to such a circumstance.
