ATTENDANCE MATTERS

10/20/2023

Nichols Knights Families,

Lunch with Someone Special was a huge success!  Thank you so much for all of you who came to visit and thank you to all the staff members and volunteers who made it possible.  The kids had such a wonderful time.  They were so excited to have their special people in the building with them.  Thanks again!  What a great day!

Next week is Red Ribbon Week!  As always, Mrs. Clark has lots of learning activities and fun things planned.  Be sure to check out her post about dress-up days on Class Dojo.  Monday is “Our Dreams are Too Big for Drugs - Wear pajamas.”

The Student handbook was shared on Class Dojo, can be found on the Nichols website, and is linked here.  Each week at the beginning of the year, I will share a couple of tidbits from the Student handbook to answer questions we have been getting phone calls about.

This week’s tidbit is about:

DRESS CODE EXPECTATIONS and Rules for “dress-up” and “spirit” days

  • All students have the responsibility to observe basic standards of cleanliness and good grooming.  The student is expected to dress in a manner that is appropriate and not distracting to the educational process.  Specific dress code reminders include the following:

    • Students are not allowed to wear shorts/pants with holes that expose skin.

    • Shorts and skirts must be a reasonable length, 3”-4” in length. (At minimum they must be below the fingertips when arms hang straight down.)

    • Hats or other head coverings (including scarves) are to be removed upon entering the school building with the exception of designated days or medical purposes.

    • Plain headbands may be worn.  A student wearing a headband with ears, horns, etc. might be asked to remove that headband if it causes a distraction.

    • Students may not carry or wear clothing that advertises gangs, drugs, alcohol, tobacco products, or obscenities nor may they wear their clothing in such a way as to look like a gang member, such as sagging pants, bandannas, etc…

    • Students are not allowed to wear pants that, when fastened, sag or fit below the waist.  All pants must fit around the waist and be properly fastened.

    • No spaghetti string tops are to be worn at school.  No shirts or dresses that are backless. No halter tops.  No bare midriffs.  No racer back tops. No muscle shirts.

    • No shoes with wheels are permitted.

    • Tennis shoes are recommended to participate in PE classes.

    • Also prohibited: clothing, accessories, or changes in appearance that causes disruption to the teaching process/classroom.

    • The principal has the final say in determining the appropriateness of student dress. If you wonder if it will be allowed, it’s probably best that you don’t allow your child to wear it.

Rules for “dress-up” and “spirit” days

  • Periodically, we will have days when students are allowed to “dress up” for various reasons: school spirit, Red Ribbon Week, Career Day, Read Across America, etc.

  • Please still adhere to the normal dress code policy with regard to modesty, and to the following additional rules:

    • Elementary school-age appropriate

      • No weapons

      • Nothing scary, no blood, no gore

    • No masks covering the face

    • Students must be able to use the restroom

    • Costumes must not interfere with education

    • The principal has the final say in determining the appropriateness of student costumes.

Upcoming dates:

10/31 - Trick-or-Treating in the halls and Fall parties (Yes, students may wear costumes.)

11/4 - Fall Festival 2:00 - 6:00

11/13 - Picture re-takes

Have a wonderful weekend !
